Pattern: Merry-Go-Round Hat



Babies and children can totally pull off the fun look of having a carousel on top of their heads! But the pattern contains suggestions for sizing it up (as well as down, for newborns) in case there are any adults who like the idea, too. :) Pom-pom is optional.

Sizing

  • Baby: finished circumference about 14”
  • Toddler: finished circumference about 16”
  • Child: finished circumference about 18”

Skills required

  • Using DPNs (or another technique to achieve the same thing, such as Magic Loop)
  • Chart reading
  • Stranded knitting
  • Intarsia

Materials needed

  • Yarn: Fingering weight, as follows (all yardages are approximates) - Colours A, B, and C are the background colours (B is used for the tent stripes and C for the pom-pom); colour D is the main colour which picks out the imagery
    • Baby: 28 yards colour A, 36 yards colour B, 22 yards colour C (26 with pom-pom), 68 yards colour D
    • Toddler: 28 yards colour A, 34 yards colour B, 20 yards colour C (24 with pom-pom), 87 yards colour D
    • Child: 34 yards colour A, 47 yards colour B, 27 yards colour C (31 with pom-pom), 101 yards colour D
  • Needles: Either 3mm DPNs or two 3mm circulars 16" long (for two circular technique) or one 3mm circular 80cm long (if using magic loop technique)

Gauge

  • Baby: One repeat of Chart D, blocked, should measure 3.5" wide and 4.25" high
  • Toddler: One repeat of Chart E, blocked, should measure 3.25" wide and 4.25" high
  • Child: One repeat of Chart F, blocked, should measure 3 5/8" wide and 4 3/16" high
