This earflap hat is double-thick, reversible, and the pattern allows you to make it to fit heads of all sizes - from newborns to big adults!

Sizing

  • Newborn: to fit head circumference of 14.25”
  • Infant: to fit head circumference of 16”
  • Toddler: to fit head circumference of 17.75”
  • Child: to fit head circumference of 19.5”
  • Small adult: to fit head circumference of 21 1/3”
  • Medium adult: to fit head circumference of 23”
  • Large adult: to fit head circumference of 24 7/8”
  • X-large adult: to fit head circumference of 26 2/3”

Skills required

  • Using DPNs (or another technique to achieve the same thing, such as Magic Loop)
  • Chart reading
  • Grafting (aka Kitchener Stitch)
  • This pattern requires double knitting, instructions for which are included in the pattern. If you can do the knit stitch and the purl stitch, you can double knit!

Materials needed

  • Yarn: DK weight, as follows (yardages given are approximates) - models used James C. Brett "Marble", 100% acrylic, 220yds/100g, colours 18 Sandpiper and 13 Misty Brown (medium adult size), 02 Denims and 9 Berries (child size), and 06 Moss and 09 Berries (toddler size)
    • Newborn: 60 yards of each colour
    • Infant: 70 yards of each colour
    • Toddler: 80 yards of each colour
    • Child: 95 yards of each colour
    • Small adult: 110 yards of each colour
    • Medium adult: 125 yards of each colour
    • Large adult: 155 yards of each colour
    • X-large adult: 170 yards of each colour
  • Needles: 
    • 4.5mm DPNs
    • (optional) 4.5mm circular needle 12" long (for use if the hat circumference gets too large for the DPNs)
  • Cable needle
  • Stitch marker

Gauge

  • 36 stitches (per side) and 26 rows = 4” in double knitted stocking stitch on 4.5mm needles
